Housed in an 18th century townhouse, Chippenham Museum tells the fascinating story of this historic market town from its prehistoric origins to the present day. Learn about the town’s development, through its connections to river, road and rail, and explore its surprising links to Alfred the Great and Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
Significant collections relating to regional crime and punishment organisation or to a particular individual Chippenham Museum holds two main groups of material relating to crime and punishment: Wiltshire Police Loan: these are objects on loan to us and relate to the history of Wiltshire Constabulary. It mostly consists of objects such as uniforms, restraints etc, rather than documents. Also Bailiff books: The museum holds Chippenham Town Council records, dating back to the 16th century including its Bailiff records. These can be accessed at the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre.
Accessibility and disability arrangements / Covid requirements We encourage wearing face coverings for the comfort of all visitors, unless exceptions apply. We are continuing with enhanced cleaning of common touchpoints.
