Metropolitan Police

Collections held:

Dates: 1900-1949

We are in the unusual position as a group of mainly retired, also serving police women who formed an Association 40 years ago who have decided with the Met's blessing to bring together any records relating to women police from storage, (which is where most of the Met. archives are) to sort, catalogue and digitalise as a legacy for the the 100th anniversary of Women in the Met. which is in 2019.

Back in 1915 two groups of women police patrols emerged - The NUWW is the foundation of the Met. women but most of the early women were trained in London and went out to the counties to form local groups. We have discovered in our collection many letters and reports from around the country in those first years of women in policing which is also an amazing record of local life.
