We are a traditional local archive service, holding a mass of records relating to crime, justice and punishment in all the categories mentioned. All percentages and measurements given are approximate. I would be surprised if many services like ours will be able to be much more precise in numerical terms. A bald number doesn’t seem to me to be particularly helpful. We would be the first port of call for researchers needing original records in this area – for Stafford Prison, the county’s past 43 magistrates, petty and quarter sessions courts and its police service. The collections for Lichfield Record Office (7 from magistrates courts and 2 from Quarter Sessions) will be transferred to Stafford in early 2018, so we do not propose making a separate return.
